BEAR HUNTS

SPRING BLACK BEAR HUNTS

Our spring hunts start the third week of May and run through the middle of June. By this time of the year it's light enough to hunt all night! And, you can do it legally. This eliminates the problem of bears feeding on baits after dark and you never seeing them. We fly into a lake by float plane and access baits by jet riverboat that are situated along a small remote river. At DENALI HUNTS we have comfortable tent camps. We keep them small (4-6 hunters per week). All of our spring bear hunts are fully guided: one guide with one hunter. You have the advantage of an experienced guide to judge your trophy before you shoot and at the same time your guide can video your hunt. If you book your hunt with three hunting buddies you can come as a group and have the whole camp to yourselves for the week. The area we hunt has a three bear limit. However, we encourage our clients to be selective and only take one bear. If you harvest a bear early and want to take a second bear, that can be done on a trophy fee basis. We do this to keep harvest levels at a level that will allow for continuing years of trophy quality bears. The spring of 2000 was our first year. Our clients averaged seeing 8-10 bears per set, with as many as 16 different bears on a bait in one night. Our six clients and took six mature Black bears. Four of these green scored high enough to make the Pope &Young record books. As expected we harvested a high percentage six to six and a half foot of record book bears. The best bear in 2000 officially scored 19 0/16 P&Y points. The price for five full days of Black bear hunting is $2,500.00 per person.

1/2 PRICE HUNTS

We believe that spring Black bears over bait is the ideal first hunt for a young, or new bowhunter. Therefore, to increase the number of kids getting the opportunity to hunt spring bears we let them hunt for 1/2 price, if they’re accompanied by a hunting adult. At DENALI HUNTS a six day fully-guided Black bear hunt for kids only costs $1,250.00. This includes a float plane flight to and from camp, trophy care, and all meals and lodging. All hunting is done from the safety of comfortable treestands and a qualified guide will be present at all times. The reason we believe this is a great first hunt for kids is:
  1. You get to view many bears, and this keeps the young hunters interested.
  2. Shots are close and at a known distance.
  3. The bears are preoccupied with the bait and other bears making it easier to get the shot off.
  4. We put two stands in one tree: one for the hunter and one offset and slightly above the hunter. This allows the guide to quietly coach the young hunter and at the same time video the taking his or her very first big game animal.

FLOAT TRIPS & SPOT AND STALK BLACK BEARS

If hunting over bait isn’t for you we offer spring float trips for Black bear or fall spot and stalk hunts. In the spring the bears come down to the river to feed on tender shoots of grass and other new growth vegetation. On this hunt we sleep most of the day and float quiet stretches of river at night. Remember, Alaska is "The land of the midnight sun!" The price for spring floats for bears is the same as our baited hunts, $2,500.00 per person.

Our spot and stalk hunts are done in the fall when Black bears move up into the alpine meadows to feed on ripe blueberries and cranberries. For this hunt you must be in good physical condition, for it requires extensive hiking and climbing. Plan this hunt in late August or September. Shoot up to three bears - one hunter with one guide at $4,500.00 per person.

FALL INTERIOR GRIZZLY HUNTS

For fall Grizzlies we hunt high alpine areas, where the bears are gorging themselves on sweet blueberries, putting on fat for the long arctic winter. Interior bears average seven to eight feet and frequently have beautiful, long, blond pelts. In some areas this hunt can be easily combined with a Caribou or Black bear hunt. Although you will spend a lot of time sitting and glassing distant ridges and berry patches, it is important that you be in good physical condition to move in quickly for the stalk. When hunting dangerous game with bow and arrow it is important to hunt with a guide that knows bears and bowhunting. At DENALI HUNTS our guides know about shot placement and how lethal the arrow is when properly placed, but can and will act quickly in a bad or dangerous situation. Choosing a guide with these qualities will minimize conflicts over game being unnecessarily shot by a backup firearm from an overzealous guide. Our hunts take place in early September and are priced at $7,500.00 for a fully guided one-on-one hunt. Many areas are drawing permit only for non-residents, so call us early to get your name in the draw.
